Taipei, June 21 (CNA) More than 700,000 packs of military rations likely contain plasticizers, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) confirmed Tuesday.

Batches of military field rations, including oatmeal, strawberry jam, and three different pre-packaged meals, tested positive for DBP, DEHP, and DINP, respectively, said MND spokesman Lo Shao-ho in a telephone interview with a local media outlet.

Although some of the rations were previously distributed to troops around Taiwan, the ministry has ordered that all products be sealed and stored, Lo said.

The combat rations in question will be sent to the Metal Industries Research & Development Center for retesting. If the results confirm the presence of plasticizers, the MND will return the foods items to their manufacturers and seek compensation.

After a nationwide food scare over the discovery of toxic chemicals in a wide array of processed foods and beverages erupted in May, Lo said the ministry banned the use of military rations until manufacturers could provide certificates of food origin and quality assurances.

MND also voluntarily sent samples to laboratories for testing to ensure the safety of soldiers, he added.
