Taipei, April 12 (CNA) The military continued its five-day Hankuang exercises Tuesday with a drill staged to practice emergency landings and takeoffs on a section of freeway in southern Taiwan.

The drill, which began at 7: 26 a.m. and drew hundreds of spectators, saw F-16, Mirage 2000 and IDF jet fighters land on a 2.7-kilometer stretch of National Freeway No. 1 in the Madou area of Tainan City, be loaded with missiles, and then take off.

The three aircraft models form the backbone of the country's Air Force fleet.

The one-hour drill, last staged in May 2007, simulated a situation in which runways at military airports have been destroyed by missile attacks and alternative landing and takeoff areas have to be used, the military said.

Other aircraft joining in the tactical operation included CH-47 transport helicopters, OH-58D scout and attack helicopters, and AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopters.

This year's Hankuang military exercises are being held from April 11-15.
