ROC Central News Agency
Taipei, March 22 (CNA) A 2.7-kilometer section of the Sun Yat-sen Freeway will be sealed off for six hours on April 12, for a warplane emergency landing and takeoff drill, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) announced Tuesday.
"The freeway's Madou section in southern Taiwan's Tainan City will be closed to traffic from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. on that day, " said Wang Hsuan-chou, director of the combat training department under the MND's Air Force Command Headquarters, at a news conference.
Air Force pilots will practice emergency landings and take-offs on traffic lanes on the Madou section of the north-south freeway, also known as National Highway No.1.
According to MND, the exercise will also cover repairs and maintenance of military aircraft, as well as combined tactical operations. Aircraft participating in the tactical portion will include CH-47 transports, OH-58D scout and attack helicopters, and AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopters, which provide escort for assault helicopters.
Other planes to be featured in the drill include F-16, Mirage 2000-5 and IDF jet fighters. These planes form the backbone of Taiwan's Air Force arsenal. (By Emmanuelle Tzeng and Sofia Wu) enditem/ly
