Taipei, March 16 (CNA) A legislative committee approved two proposals Wednesday regarding the safety of the country's fourth nuclear power plant amid the unfolding nuclear power plant crisis in Japan following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
The Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee passed a proposal initiated by Legislator Huang Shu-ying of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party, and another one by Legislator Ho Tsai-feng of the ruling Kuomintang.
Ho proposed that the Atomic Energy Council (AEC) invite experts from the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (U.S.NRC) to review the safety of the nuclear power plant currently under construction in Kungliao, New Taipei City.
Huang for her part urged the Executive Yuan to set up an independent investigation unit to scrutinize the plant's safety and invite experts from both the International Atomic Energy Agency and the U.S.NRC, as well as environmental groups, to monitor its safety.
Vice Premier Sean Chen said later that the Executive Yuan will consider the two proposals and discuss with the AEC how best to ensure the nuclear plant's safety.
"The overriding considerations will be to protect public safety and work in line with international norms," Chen said.
