Taipei, Oct. 19 (CNA) Premier Wu Den-yih expressed confidence Tuesday that China's next leader would continue to pursue the peaceful and stable development of relations with Taiwan, which he called a "direction that should not be reversed."

"We believe and expect the future leader of China will continue to deal with Taiwan based on the principles of sincerity, equality and dignity and follow the path of cross-Taiwan Strait peace and stability, " Wu said during an interpellation session in the Legislative Yuan, when he was asked to comment on the designation of Xi Jinping as China's fifth-generation leader.

Xi, currently China's vice president, was named vice chairman of the Central Military Commission on Monday during the fifth plenum of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

The position, which overseas the People's Liberation Army, is considered a stepping stone to China's top leadership post.

Wu said he did not know Xi, but he hoped the next leader of China would follow in the footsteps of incumbent Hu Jintao and promote policies that are in the interests of Taiwan and its people.

Asked about the possibility of a meeting between President Ma Ying-jeou and Hu or one between himself and his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao, Wu said meetings between leaders across the Taiwan Strait should take place at a proper time and occasion.

According to Wu, a stronger consensus on the issue needs to be built within Taiwan and a higher level of goodwill developed between the two sides before such meetings could be held.

Wu said, however, that he welcomed any contacts between the opposition Democratic Progressive Party and China as long as such contacts are beneficial to Taiwan. (By Ho Meng-kuei, Kelven Huang, Justin Su and Y.F. Low) ENDITEM/ls
