Taipei, Oct. 13 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou expressed confidence Wednesday that Taiwan will soon reach agreements with the United States on a number of bilateral issues that are under negotiation, including the sale of F-16 C/D fighters to Taiwan.

Other major items on the agenda are the inclusion of Taiwan in the U.S. visa waiver program and the signing of an extradition treaty.

"Although some of the problems cannot be resolved in a short period of time, I believe they will be overcome with mutual trust, " Ma told visiting U.S. congressman Bob Inglis, a senior Republican on the House's Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific and the Global Environment under the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Ma said he has worked to restore mutual trust with the United States and improve relations with China since his inauguration in May 2008.

The efforts have produced good results, with Taiwan-U.S. talks under the framework of the bilateral Trade and Investment Framework Agreement set to be resumed at the end of this year, he noted.

With cross-Taiwan Strait ties improving, Washington no longer needs to choose sides between Taipei and Beijing and can develop friendly relations with both at the same time, Ma said. (By Garfie Li and Y.F. Low) ENDITEM/ls
