Washington, Sept. 22 (CNA) The annual Taiwan-U.S. Defense Industry Conference will be held in the U.S. state of Maryland Oct. 3-5, the U.S.-Taiwan Business Council said in a statement released Tuesday.

The council, which groups U.S. companies with interests in Taiwan, said this year's conference, the ninth of its kind, will focus on topics that include future cross-Taiwan Strait relations and threats, the ability of Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) in terms of response to natural disasters, and its asymmetrical military capability.

Wallace C. Gregson, assistant secretary of defense for Asia and Pacific security affairs, and Andrew J. Shapiro, assistant secretary of state for political-military affairs, will deliver keynote speeches at the conference, the statement said, adding that a senior Taiwanese defense official will also speak.

In line with MND protocol, the Taiwanese official was not named in the statement. (By Zep Hu and Hanna Liu) ENDITEM/J
