Taipei, June 11 (CNA) Life sentences for former President Chen Shui-bian and his wife Wu Shu-jen, both of whom have been found guilty of corruption, have been lowered to 20 years in prison, the Taiwan High Court announced Friday.
The fines to be paid by Chen and Wu were also reduced to NT$170 million and NT$200 million, respectively, down from the original NT$200 million and NT$300 million.
The period for which each of them will be deprived of their civil rights was also shortened to 10 years from life.
The former first couple were sentenced to life imprisonment Sept. 11, 2009 by the Taipei District Court after being found guilty in four corruption cases, including misuse of special state funds and bribes-taking in a Lungtan land deal and the Nangang Exhibition Hall construction project.
