Time not ripe for cross-strait military talks: former official

London, June 3 (CNA) A Taiwanese ex-national security chief said here Thursday that the time for talks between Taiwan and China on the building of military mutual trust is not ripe at this time.

Former National Security Council Secretary-General Su Chi told CNA that Taiwan needs time to prepare for such talks, although the international community is eager to see them start.

Citing the Taiwanese opposition parties' all-out fight against ongoing trade talks between Taiwan and China, Su said negotiations on building military mutual trust will be much more controversial than the trade talks, despite Washington's support for such talks and Beijing's willingness to engage in them.

"In the near future, there is no possibility for such talks," he said.

However, the situation across the Taiwan Strait is much more stable than before, he said, as Taiwan will not provoke China and China is unlikely to attack Taiwan, in view of the fact that there are many sea and air links across the Taiwan Strait every day.

Su Chi was in Britain on a speaking tour at the invitation of Oxford University and Chatham House, a British think tank. (By Jennifer Huang and Maubo Chang) ENDITEM/J
