Taipei, March 23 (CNA) Defense needs will be the key consideration when the government studies a proposal to relocate the air base at the Taipei Songshan Airport to make way for an expansion of the commercial part of the airport, Premier Wu Den-yih said Tuesday. OK LIKE THIS? Wu said the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) should discuss with the Ministry of National Defense on whether it is necessary to maintain the Songshan air base where it is.

"If the answer is affirmative, then the air base will be maintained, " Wu said during an interpellation session in the Legislative Yuan.

He was speaking in response to a proposal by ruling Kuomintang (KMT) Legislator Ting Shou-chung that the air base be relocated so that the Songshan airport can build a new terminal there.

Minister of Transportation and Communications Mao Chi-kuo said the proposal did not come from his ministry, which has never thought of moving the air base to another site.

Mao said in the MOTC's airport expansion plan, Songshan airport is defined as a small-size commercial airport, and its existence should not affect the development of the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport located in nearby Taoyuan county.

At present, the MOTC's goal is to develop the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport into a major airport in East Asia, he said, (By Vicky Hsu and Y.F. Low) ENDITEM/cs
