Taipei, March 23 (CNA) Air Force chief of staff Wong Hsuan-chou on Tuesday morning confirmed that a Russian TU-95 aircraft had briefly entered Taiwan's Air Force Identification Zone on Jan. 28 while flying south near northeastern Taiwan, but said the aircraft turned around and headed toward Japan after it received a message from Taiwan aviation authorities.
Rebutting a local media report that the Air Force did not attend to Russian military aircraft entry into Taiwan's Air Force Identification Zone, Wong said that the incident was handled in line with proper procedure. The Air Force stepped up radar monitoring, raised the alert warning level, and tried to identify the aircraft, he elaborated.
The Air Force found that the aircraft was not hostile and was departing after it received a message transmitted by Taiwan aviation authorities, he said. (By Hsieh Chia-chen and Lillian Lin) Enditiem /pc
