Taipei, March 9 (CNA) Premier Wu Den-yih said Tuesday that the time is not yet ripe for a summit meeting between President Ma Ying- jeou and his Chinese counterpart, Hu Jintao.

"The timing for a proposed Ma-Hu meeting will be ripe only when there is sufficient goodwill and mutual trust between Taiwan and China, " Wu said while fielding questions from Legislator Chu Feng-chih of the ruling Kuomintang at a legislative session.

Chu urged the government to be well-prepared for such a meeting, which she said will take place sooner or later, as China reportedly wants to hold political talks with Taiwan.

Wu said that while possible one day, there is still a long process of "peaceful development" to go before such a summit can be expected.

On the proposed economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) with China, Wu said the results of the latest public poll show that 54.6 percent of the respondents support the signing of such a trade pact with China. He added that the government will make greater efforts to increase the public approval rating before the pact is signed.

Mainland Affairs Council Chairwoman Lai Shin-yuan said the government aims to sign the ECFA in either May or June. (By Su Lung-chi and Bear Lee) ENDITEM/J
