Taipei, Aug.27 (CNA) The Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, is welcome to visit Taiwan, as his visit will provide spiritual support for survivors of the devastating Typhoon Morakot, a Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) official said Thursday.
"Religious belief can help disaster survivors to get back on track and the Dalai Lama's visit will help rest the soul of the dead and comfort the survivors," said MAC Vice Chairman Liu Te-shun.
Stressing that the government has approved the Dalai Lama's visit on humanitarian and religious stances, Liu said the event is not expected to adversely affect relations across the Taiwan Strait.
The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader is scheduled to arrive in Taiwan Aug.30 for a six-day visit at the invitation of seven southern Taiwan local government heads.
He will head for some of the worst-hit disaster areas in southern Taiwan, including Siaolin village in Kaohsiung County and Linbian Township in neighboring Pingtung County, Sept. 1 and Sept. 2.
The storm claimed more than 600 lives when it lashed Taiwan Aug.7-9.
