Taipei, Aug. 19 (CNA) Executive Yuan Secretary-General Hsieh Hsiang-chuan and Defense Minister Chen Chao-min have offered to resign after they became magnets for criticism for the government's slow response to the destruction wrought by Typhoon Morakot last week, an official said Wednesday.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Executive Yuan will brief the press on their resignations later in the day.
Cable TV news reports said Premier Liu Chao-shiuan is not expected to immediately accept their offers to resign because of ongoing disaster relief efforts but will wait until early September to deal with the issue.
Hsieh has been heavily criticized for leaving the Central Emergency Operation Center Aug. 8 while southern Taiwan was being pummeled by torrential rains from Typhoon Morakot for a Father's Day dinner.
Chen was bashed for the military's lackluster deployment of troops and equipment to remote and flooded areas and its seeming lack of preparedness when faced with the natural disaster.
