Taipei, Jan. 13 (CNA) A ship belonging to Taiwan-based Formosa Plastics Marine Corp. (FPMC) was escorted Monday by Chinese naval vessels in the Gulf of Aden in a special operation against possible pirate attacks, sources in Taiwan have confirmed.
The vessel, named Formosaproduct Cosmos, is an oil tanker built in 2005, according to information obtained from the Formosa Plastics Group's Web site.
The news was first released by China's official Xinhua news agency Monday. Two China-owned ships and another China-registered Filipino ship were also escorted for 553 nautical miles in the same operation, Xinhua said.
It was the second escort operation run by the Chinese naval vessels since their arrival in the region recently, Xinhua said.
Neither the Ministry of National Defense nor FPMC has commented on the information.
Only last week, the Mainland Affairs Council said it would not accept Beijing's offer to protect Taiwanese ships from Somalian pirates in the Gulf of Aden, which sits between Yemen and northern Somalia.
