Prosecutors to appeal ex-president's release Thursday
ROC Central News Agency
Taipei, Dec. 24 (CNA) Prosecutors are ready to again appeal the Taipei District Court's decision to release former President Chen Shui-bian on his own recognizance, Supreme Prosecutors Office (SPO) sources said Wednesday.
Prosecutors with the SPO's Special Investigation Division (SID) have finalized preparations of all documents needed for the appeal, the sources said, adding that barring unexpected developments, the appeal will be filed Thursday afternoon at the earliest.
According to the sources, the SID team handling the corruption and money laundering case against the ex-president will ask the Taiwan High Court to hand down a ruling on its request to have Chen detained again instead of sending the case back to the district court for a new hearing as it did in the past.
On Dec. 18, the Taipei District Court rejected prosecutors appeal and upheld its earlier decision to free Chen without bail.
In its Dec.13 ruling, the court ordered that Chen, who was detained Nov. 12, be released without bail following his indictment, along with 13 other people, on charges of embezzlement, corruption and money laundering.
Chen and his wife are accused of siphoning off NT$104 million (US$3.12 million) from a special Presidential Office discretionary fund during his presidency from 2000 to 2008.
They are also charged with accepting bribes worth NT$100 million and NT$200 million in connection with a land procurement deal and another NT$90.93 million in kickbacks to help a contractor win the tender for a government construction project, according to the indictment. (By Sofia Wu) enditem
