Taipei, Oct. 23 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou has never given up on his demand for China to remove its missiles targeting Taiwan, in his work to improve cross-Taiwan Strait relations, a Presidential Office official said Thursday.
Spokesman Wang Yu-chi dismissed as a "pseudo issue" a claim by former President Chen Shui-bian that Ma has abandoned his position on the Chinese missile threat.
In a statement issued earlier in the day, Chen accused Ma of "deliberately avoiding" any mention of the missile issue while speaking on the possibility of a cross-Taiwan Strait accord, in a recent interview with the India and Global Affairs quarterly.
Ma had previously said cross-strait peace talks would only be possible if China removes its more than 1,000 missiles targeting Taiwan.
