Taiwan mulling new tack for U.N. bid: president
ROC Central News Agency
Taipei, July 12 (CNA) Taipei is mulling a new tack for its bid to join the United Nations, in line with the changing situation, President Ma Ying-jeou said Saturday.
Noting that the country has tried in vain for more than a decade to gain access to the global body, Ma said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been instructed to come up with a new approach before the U.N. Assembly gathers in New York for its annual meeting in September.
The new approach is especially needed in light of the fact that the previous administration's referendums on whether the country should seek U.N. access under the name of Taiwan or the Republic of China failed March 22, Ma went on.
The two referendums -- held along with the presidential election -- failed because neither of them had attracted enough votes to make its outcome binding. (By Maubo Chang) ENDITEM/J
