Energy-saving measures won't affect Han Kuang exercises: MND

ROC Central News Agency

Taipei, July 8 (CNA) The military's energy saving measures will not affect the annual Han Kuang exercises, a Ministry of National Defense (MND) official said Tuesday.

Lee Yue-chang, assistant deputy chief of the general staff for operations and planning under the MND, said that the military is implementing the measures in line with the government's energy conservation policy amid skyrocketing international oil prices.

While stressing that his ministry fully supports the energy saving measures, Lee said that they will not undermine the quality of the armed forces' training and combat readiness exercises.

The military is mapping out ways of cutting energy consumption based on the approach of "using energy only when needed, and saving energy when it can be saved."

For example, Lee said, one possibility might be to combine flight training missions in order to reduce the amount of fuel used by combat jets without reducing pilots' training hours.

Another possibility is increasing the use of computer simulation exercises to give officers more opportunities to hone their skills in a more efficient manner, he added.

Lee stressed, however, that all energy-saving measures will adhere to the principal of not compromising the quality of military training or the armed forces' combat readiness. (by Steve Bercic) enditem/ls
