KMT chairman calls for resumption of cross-strait dialogue

    Beijing, May 27 (CNA) Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung called for the resumption of dialogue between China's Association of Relations Across the Taiwan Straits and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation Tuesday.

    Wu who is here for a visit at the head of a KMT delegation made the call in a closed door meeting with Jia Qinglin, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, according to a press release issued by Wu's entourage.

     The Straits Exchange Foundation and the Association of Relations Across the Taiwan Straits were set up by Beijing and Taipei to deal with each other in the absence of official ties.

    The press release quoted Wu as telling Jia that the Taipei-based Straits Exchange Foundation has completed a reshuffle early that day, with KMT Vice Chairman P. K. Chiang as its chairman.

    Wu proposed to his Chinese host to allow the Straits Exchange Foundation under Chiang's leadership to resume contacts with its Beijing's counterpart as soon as possible.

    After then, Wu was quoted as saying that the chief of Beijing's Association of Relations Across the Taiwan Straits may visit Taipei to improve ties across the strait.

    Wu who arrived in China on Monday is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao Wednesday. It is Hu who doubles as the general secretary of Communist Party of China invited Wu to visit Beijing.
