Taipei, May 26 (CNA) The Ministry of National Defense (MND) will make its operations more transparent in an effort to help all Taiwan citizens better understand the nation's defense policies and responsibilities, the new Minister of National Defense Chen Chao-min vowed Monday.

Noting that people have the right to know what the MND is doing, Chen said at press briefing that his ministry will work toward that end and that it expects the media to play a professional role. "We at the MND will actively inform the public about our achievements in order to satisfy people's right to know, " Chen pledged. "The media should also communicate clearly with the ministry and produce reports on national defense that are professional, meticulous, and balanced."

Chen reaffirmed that the MND will maintain its political neutrality, as stipulated in the Constitution, and will fight for the survival of the Republic of China.

Although tensions across the Taiwan Strait are easing as a result of a more amicable China policy by President Ma Ying-jeou, the Taiwan military will adhere to its national security responsibilities, Chen vowed. "We will maintain the quality of the armed forces, and will ensure the quality of national security to protect all the people," Chen said, adding that the ministry will also hammer out measures to cope with the expected launch of direct cross-strait charter flights.

He also promised to establish a good administrative model and make the MND a more cohesive and harmonious governmental agency.

Chen added he will do his best to improve the welfare of the armed forces, which he said is one of his main concerns.
