Taipei, March 28 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian named a transition team Friday to prepare for transferring power to President-elect Ma Ying-jeou of the opposition Kuomintang May 20.
The Presidential Office said in a news release that to ensure a smooth transfer of power, the president has named a transition team led by Tan Sun Chen, the secretary-general to the president.
Other members of the team include Chen Chi-mai and Lin Chia-lung, deputy secretaries-general to the president; Acting National Security Council (NSC) Secretary-General Chen Chung-hsin, Deputy NSC Secretary-General Lin Chin-chang, Vice Premier Chiou I-jen, and Executive Yuan Secretary-General Chen Chin-jun.
According to the principles governing the transfer, the operations should not violate or diminish the constitutional rights of the incumbent president or undermine the division of power principle.
The president is also expected to designate related government agencies to brief the president-elect in due time on such major issues as national security, national defense, diplomacy and cross-Strait relations that are in the realm of the presidential duties.
Related government agencies will provide the president- and vice president-elect full security protection and preferential treatment prior to the inauguration.
President Chen has asked for a meeting with Ma next week and the latter agreed.
