Taipei, March 20 (CNA) The Ministry of National Defense (MND) said Thursday that it had no comment on reports of a U.S. aircraft carrier being deployed near the Taiwan Strait.
MND spokeswoman Lisa Chi declined to give a detailed response to questions by the media on reports that the USS Kitty Hawk, the U.S. Pacific Fleet aircraft carrier and strike group, had left its port in Japan Tuesday for a location near the Taiwan Strait. "The MND's longstanding stance is to safeguard peace in the Taiwan Strait and it also wants to see peace and stability in the region," Chi said.
The Kitty Hawk was also deployed near Taiwan prior to Taiwan's first popular presidential election in 1996 when Beijing lobbed missiles in waters near Taiwan in what was seen as an attempt to intimidate voters.
