Taipei, Feb. 26 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian predicted Tuesday that China will not lessen its oppression of Taiwan, no matter who is elected as Taiwan's new president.
Chen said China oppressed Taiwan on anything involving Taiwan's sovereignty, and its oppression can be traced back to the tenure of former President Lee Teng-hui of the now-opposition Kuomintang (KMT).
Chen made the remarks while receiving Randall Schriver, founding partner of Washington-based consulting firm Armitage International and Dan Blumenthal, resident fellow with the American Enterprise Institute, at the Presidential Office.
According to Chen, China's pressure does not alter with regard to Taiwan's different political parties.
He noted that Taiwan's special envoys -- Legislative Yuan Speaker Wang Jin-pyng, a KMT member, and National Security Council Secretary-General Tan Sun Chen, a ruling Democratic Progressive Party member -- were both barred from attending South Korean President Lee Myung-bak's inauguration ceremony due to pressure from China. "As long as Taiwan insists on its sovereignty, regardless of who is the new leader what new name the country has, China will not ease off its oppression on Taiwan," Chen said.
