Taipei, Feb. 19 (CNA) The Special Investigation Task Force (SITF) under the Supreme Prosecutors Office remains undecided on whether to probe a newly established defense company known as Taiwan Goal, a spokesman for the panel said Tuesday.
Chen Yun-nan, director of the SITF office, was commenting on media reports that the Supreme Prosecutors Office will investigate possible irregularities in Taiwan Goal's establishment under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration's guidance.
According to Chen, the SITF is just collecting news clips and other relevant information and data. At the moment, he said, the SITF is still undecided on whether to launch a probe into the case.
Meanwhile, Vice Premier Chiuo I-jen was quoted as having told incumbent and former DPP lawmakers Tuesday that the establishment of Taiwan Goal, a joint venture between the government and private investors, is mainly aimed at diversifying sources of Taiwan's arms procurement.
Taiwan Goal, founded late last month, is led by Wu Nai-jen, a stalwart of the DPP's now disbanded New Tide faction. Capital of NT$200 million (US$6.3 million) has been underwritten for Taiwan Goal, with NT$90 million expected to come from the Ministry of National Defense. As the project is still in the planning stages, the defense ministry has not yet injected any funds into the company, ministry officials said.
