New York, Dec. 18 (CNA) Republic of China Minister of Foreign Affairs James Huang said in New York City Tuesday that neither Taiwan nor the United States want to see China benefit from the friction in their relationship.
Speaking at a news conference at LaGuardia Airport upon his arrival from Atlanta following his official visit to Latin America and the Caribbean, Huang said that differences do indeed exist between Taiwan and the United States, including over the issue of the upcoming referendum on the country applying to join the United Nations under the name Taiwan.
Noting that neither the United States nor Taiwan would like China to gain advantage from their differences, Huang said that there is room for the two sides to communicate over the referendum issue.
Before arriving in New York, Huang made a stopover in Atlanta where he presided over a working meeting with Ministry of Foreign Affairs colleagues posted in North America, during which they discussed ways to strengthen Taiwan-U.S. relations.
Huang is scheduled to meet with members of the National Committee on American Foreign Policy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the resolution of conflicts that threaten U.S. interests, Wednesday to exchange views on issues of mutual concern, including Taiwan's referendum plans.
