Washington, Dec. 17 (CNA) The Republic of China Defense Mission to the United States serves only the country and has no affiliations with any political parties, Maj. Gen. Chen Ching-chon, chief of the mission, said Sunday.

Chen further said that there is no discord within the mission.

Reports quoting Legislator Sandy Yen of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said some of Chen's subordinates disagreed with the way he was managing the mission and therefore reported the matter to relevant authorities.

The reports also said that divisions exist within the defense mission between pro-DPP and pro-Kuomintang (KMT) factions due to the nonstop fighting between the ruling and main opposition parties over the arms procurement bill.

Chen said he was appalled to hear about the reports, claiming the defense mission has always striven to serve the country. He added that such divisions do not exist and that the mission simply carries out the orders issued to it by the government.

He added that there is nothing unusual about the fact that he has been transferred back to Taiwan, because his term has ended.

Chen also said that he has not yet received any orders regarding Navy Rear Adm. Tan Chi-lung assuming the post of chief of the defense mission and Air Force Col. Hsu Wei-kuang, who is slated to be promoted to major general this week, assuming the newly-added post of deputy chief.
