Taipei, Dec. 7 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) expressed serious concern Friday about China's plan to designate an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) within the Taiwan Strait.

MOFA officials said China's plan will undermine the stability in the Taiwan Strait and international aviation safety.

The ministry is closely watching developments related to China's plan and will join hands with major countries to express its stance to the International Civil Aviation Organization and China, the officials said.

The ministry will also solicit support for Taiwan in taking necessary action to safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, they added.

The officials made the remarks one day after President Chen Shui-bian's meeting with U.S. Rep. Eni Faleomavaega, who serves as the chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific and the Global Environment.

The president told Faleomavaega that China's plan to designate an ADIZ within the Taiwan Strait, which will prevent the United States and Japan from gathering military intelligence on China, and to inaugurate a new air route west of the median of the Taiwan Strait, will destabilize the peaceful status quo in the Taiwan Strait.

Chen expressed the hope that the United States and Japan will address the serious issue and China's "irrational move."
