Taipei, Dec.3 (CNA) The deputy head of the Special Service Center under the National Security Bureau (NSB) has decided to resign from his post and retire from public service of his own volition, according to an NSB news release issued late Sunday.

The news release came after media reports claimed that Hsu Li-meng was forced to resign as a result of a recent spate of security incidents.

The reports were incorrect, the NSB news release said.

According to the news release, Chang Kan-ping, incumbent deputy head of the Reserve Command of the Ministry of National Defense, will succeed Hsu.

Noting that the center is aimed at maintaining the security of the head of state, it requires agility, alertness and coordination, the NSB news release said.

The press statement said the center should catch up with the times and that its most crucial mission is to maintain security during next year's presidential election.

The NSB will demand that its personnel focus on security work and image management, the statement added.

Several incidents, such as the suicide of a sergeant while on duty at the presidential residence and protests against the president during his recent grassroots outreach tours, have given rise to the rumor that NSB Director Shi Hwei-yow was dissatisfied with Hsu and ordered his replacement.
