Taipei, Dec. 1 (CNA) The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate reiterated Saturday that if elected, he will not back away from his "open-door" stance on policy toward exchanges across the Taiwan Strait.

Speaking in an informal meeting with local reporters in the central city of Taichung at the end of a series of grassroots outreach campaign tours in central Taiwann, Frank Hsieh said that if he wins the March 22, 2008 presidential election, he will honor his promise to take active steps to help Taiwanese businesspeople operating in China, known locally as Taishang, cope with their problems and hurdles. "My cross-strait policy visions and initiatives are based on a Taiwan-centric concept and I fully understand that Taishang face hardships doing business in China. I see no reason for the government to deny them any help," Hsieh said.

Noting that Taiwan's investment in China accounted for 0.5 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) in 1999, Hsieh said the ratio already surged to 2.2 percent in 2006. "The figures indicate that certain problems exist in our China-bound investment management mechanism," Hiseh said, adding that if elected, he will see to it that a thorough review be made and new measures worked out to make amends.
