Taipei, Nov. 12 (CNA) Opposition Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou said Monday that if elected, he will seek to end the hostile stand-off across the Taiwan Strait and sign a peace accord between Taiwan and China.

However, China must first remove all the missiles targeting Taiwan as a precondition for the signing of a cross-strait peace agreement, Ma reiterated, adding that this concept is already a part of his campaign platform.

Ma made the remarks at a party function held to commemorate the birth anniversary of the nation's founding father Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who also founded the KMT and designed the five-branch system of government which is spelled out in the ROC Constitution.

Meanwhile, Ma offered his appreciation to United Microelectronics Corp. honorary Chairman Robert Tsao for the high-technology entrepreneur's advice on seeking peace across the Taiwan Strait. Tsao ran a front-page advertisement in several newspapers Monday to call for Ma and ruling Democratic Progressive Party presidential candidate Frank Hsieh to jointly draft a "cross strait peace bill" for peaceful co-existence across the Taiwan Strait.

Ma noted that he has continued to work toward seeking permanent peaceful engagement between Taiwan and mainland China.

He added that if he is elected in the March 22, 2008 presidential election, he will see to it that the consensus on the signing of a cross-strait peace accord that was reached between KMT honorary Chairman Lien Chan and the Chinese leadership during Lien's visit to Beijing in 2005 is materialized.
