Washington, Sept. 14 (CNA) Four U.S. congressmen spoke out in favor of Taiwan's access to the United Nations as many Taiwan expatriates living in the United States are preparing for a rally in New York Saturday to boost Taiwan's U.N. bid.
Rep. Anthony D. Weiner, a Democratic from New York state, said in a letter to C.T. Lee, president of the Formosa Association for Public Affairs that he supports the rally to gain U.N. membership for Taiwan, just as he did in the past. Weiner said he regretted the United Nations continues to disregard the sovereignty of Taiwan and deny the right of self-determination to its people.
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a Republican from California, said in his letter to Lee that he totally supports Taiwan's aspirations to be a member of the United Nations, adding that it is incongruous that a world body founded on the principle of universality and self-determination excludes a free, democratic and independent nation of 23 million people.
Rep. Robert Andrews, a Democratic from New Jersey, said China must recognize that Taiwan is neither rival nor vassal, rather it is a neighbor and the United Nations is a body in which all sovereign and peace loving nations should have a voice.
Rep. Edolphus Towns, a Democratic from New York state, said that the people of Taiwan have demonstrated that they are responsible citizens of the world. They deserve a voice and a seat at the U.N. Here and now.
