Taipei, Sept. 5 (CNA) Chinese President Hu Jintao is not entitled to criticize Taiwan's plan to hold a referendum on its bid to join the United Nations under the name Taiwan, Minister of Foreign Affairs James Huang said Wednesday.

Huang made the remarks after Hu denounced Taiwan's planned referendum as a secessionist move aimed at promoting independence of Taiwan.

According to a Hong Kong-based Phoenixtv.com report, Hu said that Taiwan's authorities are stubbornly advocating independence of Taiwan by promoting a referendum on Taiwan's U.N. membership bid, but China will by no means allow anyone to seek to separate Taiwan from China.

In response, Huang said that Taiwan is an independent sovereign country and that holding a U.N. bid referendum is a democratic procedure to demonstrate the collective determination of Taiwan's people on this issue, which the minister described as a proud moment in the process of the country's democratic development.

Huang stressed that Hu's statement will influence neither Taiwan's effort to push for its entry into the United Nations nor the planned referendum.
