Taipei, Sept. 5 (CNA) The U.S. government is concerned about U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's misinterpretation of the gist of the U.N. Resolution 2758 as meaning that "Taiwan is part of the People's Republic of China, " Minister of Foreign Affairs James Huang said Wednesday.

Huang was responding to a report by the Taipei-based China Times that the United States has sent a letter to the United Nations expressing disagreement with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's statement earlier this year that Taiwan is a part of the PRC in terms of the Resolution 2758.

According to Huang, Ban's statement deviated from the internationally accepted formula. To the best of his knowledge, he added that the U.S. government is concerned with Ban's statement because there was a large gap between Ban's interpretation of Resolution 2758 and the U.S. stance on the issue.

Huang acknowledged that Taiwan and the United States have discussed relevant topics in private. After extensive discussions, Huang said that he has noticed that staff of the U.N. Secretariat are no longer referring to Ban's earlier misinterpretation.

Resolution 2758 was adopted by the U.N. General Assembly in 1971, giving the China seat at the world body to the PRC at the expense of the Republic of China, Taiwan's official national title. The resolution did not address representation of the Taiwanese people in the body nor Taiwan's relation with China.
