Taipei, Aug. 29 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) reiterated Wednesday that the United States has misinterpreted Taiwan's plan to hold a referendum on its bid to join the United Nations under the name of Taiwan, saying it will continue to communicate with Washington on the issue.
MOFA spokesman Wang Chien-yeh repeated Foreign Affairs Minister James Huang's remarks made Aug. 27 in Nicaragua where he was accompanying President Chen Shui-bian on a state visit, in response to U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte's recent interpretation regarding the plan.
Wang said the MOFA regrets that the U.S. official characterized the referendum plan as "a step towards the declaration of independence of Taiwan." "Such an interpretation is not right at all, " Wang said, adding that holding such a referendum is a domestic affair.
He reiterated Huang's comments on Taiwan's U.N. membership referendum that organizing such an activity is "a peaceful way for the public to express its opinion."
The move will neither break President Chen Shui-bian's "four noes" pledge nor alter the state quo in the Taiwan Strait, Wang stressed.
