Taipei, Aug. 27 (CNA) China's saber-rattling and military intimidation of Taiwan over its fears of the island's democratic development is the main source of regional instability, a senior Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) official said Monday.

MAC Vice Chairman Liu Te-shun made the remarks after the local media quoted Chinese President Hu Jintao as having said recently that the only mission of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is to fight against Taiwan.

Hu was quoted as having told a closed-door meeting of the Communist Party of China (CPC) earlier this month that if the Democratic Progressive Party administration-proposed referendum on Taiwan's bid to join the United Nations under the name of Taiwan receives the support of more than half of Taiwanese voters, the CPC may consider organizing a PLA military exercise to intimidate Taiwan.

Commenting on the report, Liu said the report had not been verified or confirmed but added that the government will closely monitor the situation.

Liu further said Taiwan's peaceful quest for participation in international organizations and activities is aimed at protecting its national secutiry and has nothing to do with the independence vs. unification dispute. Moreover, he said a series of public opinion polls show that joining the United Nations under the name of Taiwan is a common aspiration of the people of Taiwan.
