Washington, Aug. 11 (CNA) Washington is urging the U. N. Secretariat to correct its statement that Taiwan is part of the territory of the People's Republic of China (PROC) , a Republic of China (ROC) diplomat posted to Washington said Saturday.
Huang Wei-feng, ROC deputy representative to the United States told a group of Taiwanese living in the United States that Washington will keep prodding the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to correct his statement made in March in a letter denying Taiwan's request to join the U.N. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
In that letter to Nauru's U.N. ambassador who relayed Taiwan's above request, Ban said Taiwan is part of PROC's territory, citing the resolution 2758 of the U.N. General Assembly in 1971.
Huang rebutted the U.N. chief's statement, saying that the resolution 2758 simply acknowledged the PROC as the sole legitimate government of China and gave it China's seat in the United Nations.
He said that Ban had made a great mistake by thinking that resolution having accepted China's claim over Taiwan.
This misunderstanding, if left uncorrected in U.N. official correspondence, will hinder Taiwan's efforts to join international organizations as a state with sovereignty, Huang said.
The United States which only acknowledges China's claim that Taiwan is part of its territory didn't see eye to eye with Ban on this issue and was pushing the U.N. chief to correct his statement, Huang said.
