Los Angeles, June 21 (CNA) Two former advisers to Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian urged the United States to recognize Taiwan as a sovereign country and establish diplomatic ties.
Peng Ming-min and Wu Li-pei, who is also founder of the Formosa Foundation, made the appeal at a press conference held in Los Angeles.
Wu noted that the main goal of the establishment of the Formosa Foundation five years ago was to challenge the "one China" policy of the United States, and that now the appeal is still more imperative.
Noting that the United States should recognize both China and Taiwan, Wu said it is necessary to tell the American public about the unfair treatment the Taiwanese people is enduring.
According to Wu, more than half of Americans do not even know that there are no diplomatic relations between the United States and Taiwan. Wu noted that it's important to make the American people understand that the establishment of U.S.-Taiwan official ties are crucial to the economic, political and military futures of both countries.
Wu added that 29 Taiwanese young people participating in a series of training courses organized by his foundation will begin visiting U.S. congressmen next week in a bid to lobby for "recognizing and establishing diplomatic ties with Taiwan."
Peng, who teaches some of the training courses, noted that the policy of the United States toward Taiwan is contradictory in that it hails Taiwan's democracy and freedom while refusing to recognize Taiwan diplomatically.
Being that the major U.S. presidential hopefuls are now bringing forward their campaign policies, Peng said it's the proper time for Taiwan to present an appeal to the American people in a bid to change the "one China" policy of the U.S. government.
