Taipei, Feb. 5 (CNA) The Ministry of National Defense (MND) will host a regional security forum Feb. 6-7, with Lee Jye, head of the ministry, to preside over the talks focusing on perspectives on regional security in East Asia, MND officials said Monday.
Many foreign and domestic scholars in the field have been invited to attend the forum, including Randy Schriver, former U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs; Dan Blumenthal, vice chairman of the U.S.-China Security and Economic Review Commission and former senior director for China, Taiwan and Mongolia in the U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense; as well as Bernard Cole, a professor of international history at the National War College in Washington, D.C.
Discussions in the forum will center on four major topics, namely ways to improve the military transparency in Asia-Pacific countries, ways to reinforce mutual trust among countries in the region, as well as humanitarian relief operations, anti-terrorism affairs, and international crisis management and conflict prevention, according to the MND.
Participants will also talk about issues concerning China's military threat against Taiwan, the current state of cross-Taiwan Strait relations, China's military modernization, and exchanges and cooperation among Japan, Taiwan and the United States.
