Taipei, Jan. 5 (CNA) After 18 months of extensive training, an eight-member squad of Army sharpshooters made a debut in Taitung Friday.
The members of the first such elite squad in eastern Taiwan also publicly performed feats such as shooting, camouflaging as well as difficult leaping and vaulting movements.
Major Chen Chin-yu, Army commander of the Taitung Command, said the squad must complete training in shooting, outdoor survival and forest combat as well as motorcycle safari and other types of rigorous training as part of the special forces.
The squad will take on the tasks of special combat assignments and anti-terrorist missions, Chen said.
He said after strenuous training and tests, the original 100 squad members were whittled down to only eight. In addition to combined combat assignments, they may also work independently.
Their basic equipment includes bows and arrows, machine guns, pistols and a 125cc motorcycle.
