Taipei, Aug. 31 (CNA) The government's plan to procure 66 F-16C/D fighter jets is proceeding as planned, a Ministry of National Defense (MND) official said Thursday.
MND spokesman Wu Chi-fang said communication between Taiwan and the United States on this issue has been proceeding smoothly although there are "many rumors out there."
Wu made the remarks in the wake of reports from Washington D.C. suggesting that the White House's National Security Council and the State Department had recommended the George W. Bush administration reject the sale of fighters to Taiwan.
On Tuesday, Deputy Defense Minister Kao Kuang-yi confirmed the ministry has included the procurement in its budget for next year.
