Taipei, Aug. 24 (CNA) An opposition lawmaker accused the Ministry of National Defense (MND) Thursday of not keeping a neutral stance toward the "1 million people to depose President Chen Shui-bian" campaign.

Kuomintang Legislator Ting Shou-chung, who serves on the legislature's National Defense Committee (NDC), said that by issuing a statement to express the military's support for the scandal-ridden president, the MND has violated the principle of administrative neutrality.

Ting also blasted the Combined Services Force Headquarters for asking post offices near military barracks to provide the names of servicemen who donated NT$100 each to help finance the campaign. "This is a blatant violation of personal privacy," he said, noting that members of the armed forces are also entitled to basic human rights under the Constitution.

Ting said he welcomes military personnel to report cases of such violations to the NDC, and he promised that he will have those military leaders found responsible dealt with according to law.
