Taipei, Aug. 18 (CNA) Deputy Defense Minister Ko Cheng-heng will attend an annual U.S.-Taiwan defense industry conference to be held Sept. 10-12 in Denver, Colorado, military sources said Friday.

The conference, the fifth of its kind since 2002, will be organized by the U.S.-Taiwan Business Council, a private U.S. association dedicated to promoting trade, economic and financial relations between Taiwan and the United States in the absence of formal diplomatic ties.

In the past, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) tended to send its deputy defense minister in charge of armament affairs to the meeting. If Ko, who is in charge of military policy and strategic affairs, attends the meeting, it would set a precedent.

MND officials said that as the conference will focus on themes related to defense industry policy, it would not be unusual to send Ko to the meeting.

Ko is expected to deliver a keynote speech on Taiwan's policy toward defense industry development and its stance on arms procurement at the opening ceremony.
