Taipei, Aug. 2 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said Wednesday that as long as there is a will, there is a way to change the U.S. "one China" policy toward Taiwan.
Chen made the remarks when he received a group of Taiwan goodwill ambassadors selected by the U.S.-based Formosa Foundation to visit the United States to seek support for Taiwan's cause.
Chen said the ultimate goal of the foundation, founded in 2001 by Wu Li-pei, one of his former senior advisers, is aimed at swaying U.S. policy toward Taiwan so as to change it from "one China" to "one China, one Taiwan."
Whether this will succeed or not will "depend on the efforts of the people, " he claimed.
Although there is still a long way to go to reaching this goal, "as long as one does not give up and follow the right path, there will be a day of success," he said.
Chen expressed his appreciation for the work done by the Formosa Foundation.
He noted that the foundation invites 10 young men from Taiwan each year to the United States. This year, the young men visited 40 U.S. states, adding that they met with 159 congressmen and aides to elaborate on Taiwan's separate identity and its efforts to defend peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, as well as the difficulties it faces, in particular Taiwan's bid to join the World Health Organization and its efforts to sign a free trade agreement with the United States.
