Taipei, July 7 (CNA) The Ministry of National Defense (MND) denied a media report Friday that the military is secretly carrying out a Hsiungfeng III long-range tactical missile development plan, saying the report was misleading and unfactual.
According to the media report, the military-run Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology (CIST) has developed a long-range tactical missile that can reach targets 600 km away.
The MND issued a press statement dismissing the report as unverified speculation.
The statement said the CIST's Hsiungfeng III missile development project is aimed at developing ship-to-ship missiles for maritime defense purposes. "We feel regret about the untruthful report," the statement said, adding that it reserves the right to sue the media over the report.
As the media's groundless speculation about the Hsiungfeng III development project could invite international concern, the MND said it felt compelled to issue a clarification.
