AIR FORCE PILOT KILLED IN TRAINER JET CRASH

    Taipei, June 17 (CNA) An Air Force trainer jet crashed in southern Chiayi County Saturday morning, killing one pilot and injuring the other, military officials said.

    The wreckage of the F5F aircraft was found aflame in a crop field in the county's Taipao city at 7:26 a.m., 26 minutes after taking off from Taitung air base on a routine training flight, the officials said.

    While pilot Chou Chieh-wei died before rescue personnel arrived, his partner Hsia Wen-yu sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Chiayi Christian Hospital, they said.

    Hsia was in stable condition after emergency treatment, doctors said.

    According to witnesses, the plane hit the railing of a road leading to the Taipao station of the high-speed railway before plunging into the field in flames.

    Ministry of National Defense officials said the military will set up a special task force to investigate the cause of the accident.
