Taipei, May 10 (CNA) Two soldiers died and five others were injured in a blast and fire at a depot in northern Taipei County, a spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense said Wednesday.
The spokesman said the explosion took place at the Combined Logistics Command's depot in Hsichi. The results of an initial investigation indicated that the blast at the depot, which stockpiles old 155 howitzer shells, might have sparked the fire, which then spread to a nearby administrative rest area.
The two dead soldiers were identified as privates Chiang Tsung-hao and Fang Wen-ping. Three others suffered minor injuries and the other two had burns, including private Pan Chien-hsun, who suffered burns over 36 percent of his body.
The ministry has formed a task force to look into the accident and determine its cause, the spokesman said.
Minister of National Defense Lee Jye has asked the Combined Logistics Command to step up security checks at all depots.
