Taipei, May 4 (CNA) Vice Minister of National Defense Chu Kai-sheng said Thursday that he has never been to the United Arab Emirates and that there have not been any arms deals between Taiwan and the U.A.E. since he assumed his current post two months ago.
Chu made the remarks in reply to a question by opposition Kuomintang (KMT) Legislator Su Chi during a committee meeting at the Legislative Yuan regarding possible military cooperation between Taiwan and the U.A.E.
Su raised the question because Minister of Foreign Affairs Huang Chih-fang and National Security Council Deputy Secretary-General Parris Chang recently visited the U.A.E.
Arms procurement or weaponry sales should be conducted via legal procedures, Chu said.
On the same occasion, Abe Lin, director of the Strategic Planning Department of the MND, also said there have been no military sales between the two countries, adding that the MND will send a procurement bill to the Legislative Yuan if any arms transactions should take place.
