Taipei, March 29 (CNA) More than 20,000 men and women in uniform would be killed or wounded within half a day in the event of a Chinese ballistic missile attack, Vice Defense Minister Chu Kai-sheng said Wednesday.
During an interpellation session at the Legislative Yuan, Chu quoted an estimate made in a Hankuang drill that should the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) fire ballistic missiles at Taiwan in five consecutive waves, which would take about half a day, between 20,000 and 30,000 armed forces personnel would be killed or wounded.
Currently, the number of Chinese missiles deployed against Taiwan is estimated at around 820, excluding cruise missiles, Chu said.
In response to a question by opposition Kuomintang Legislator Lin Yu-fang, Chu said the Ministry of National Defense estimates that some 42,000 replacement soldiers would have to be mobilized in the event of a full-scale military attack by the PLA.
