Taipei, March 15 (CNA) China is likely to take action to intimidate Taiwan militarily in the wake of Taiwan's move to cease the function of the National Unification Council (NUC), the Ministry of National Defense (MND) claimed Wednesday.
The possible steps that might be adopted by the Chinese military include extensive media coverage of military exercises, missile test-firing, sending aircraft or frigates close to Taiwan, a display of precision weapons, "decapitation" strike drills, Internet interference, creating conflict and sabotage, major movement of troops to China's southeastern coast, large-scale war games, and declaring a no-fly zone or no-sail zone, according to a written report presented by the ministry to the Legislative Yuan.
However, it admitted that the Chinese military has not launched any unusual actions so far.
Based on the principles of not escalating cross-Taiwan Strait hostilities and not causing anxiety among the people in Taiwan, the MND will strengthen its surveillance of China's military activities and continue to stay vigilant, the report said.
The military will also maintain its routine training and exercises to enhance its combat readiness, it said.
The report said that after President Chen Shui-bian ceased the function of the NUC in late February, Beijing merely launched a broadside against what it deems Taiwan's attempt to seek de jure independence and reaffirmed its resolve to protect the integrity of its territory.
Beijing has not taken any further action because ceasing the function of the NUC has not crossed the red line that calls for non-peaceful means as set down in its Anti-Secession Law, the report said.
